Rwenzori Mountains National Park is one of Uganda’s most spectacular natural destinations, protecting the legendary Rwenzori Mountains, also known as the “Mountains of the Moon.” Rising dramatically along Uganda’s western border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, the range is home to Mount Stanley and some of Africa’s highest peaks. The park is also home to a variety of wildlife and bird species, including Rwenzori turacos, sunbirds, monkeys, duikers, and other forest wildlife. The Rwenzori duiker and other species adapted to the mountain environment add to the park’s unique biodiversity.

Rwenzori Mountains National Park can be visited throughout the year, although the drier months from June to August and December to February generally provide better conditions for trekking and hiking. Weather in the mountains can change quickly, so proper preparation and suitable equipment are essential.

Reaching the park is relatively easy compared to some of Uganda’s more remote destinations. It is located near Kasese in western Uganda, approximately 5 to 6 hours by road from Kampala. The park can also be combined with visits to Queen Elizabeth National Park, making it an excellent addition to a western Uganda safari.
