Rwanda’s Ancient Rainforest and the Kingdom of Chimpanzees

Nyungwe Forest National Park is one of Africa’s oldest and most pristine montane rainforests, located in southwestern Rwanda near Lake Kivu. This ancient forest is a biodiversity hotspot and one of the best places in East Africa for primate tracking and forest exploration.

Chimpanzee tracking is the main highlight, offering an early morning adventure into dense rainforest where chimpanzees can be heard calling long before they are seen. Once located, visitors observe their fast-moving, energetic behaviour as they swing through trees and move across the forest floor.

Nyungwe is also home to 13 primate species, including colobus monkeys that form some of the largest troops in Africa. The forest canopy walk is another signature experience, offering a suspended bridge high above the forest that provides breathtaking views over endless green canopy.

Birdwatching is exceptional, with numerous Albertine Rift endemic species, while nature trails offer peaceful exploration through waterfalls, orchids, and ancient trees.

The park is located about 5–6 hours from Kigali and is often combined with Lake Kivu or Volcanoes National Park.
